Apple is betting shrink the iPhone and iPad

Greg Joswiak, vice president of product marketing for iPod, iPhone and Apple iOS
The company introduced a phone that has replaced the model 5S and a tablet of its pro line with just 9.7 inches in size. He also announced the availability of iOS 9.3

In its latest release in its current offices, Apple introduced Monday a new model of iPhone, iPad and announced the availability of a new version of iOS, the mobile operating system of the brand.

Although neither releases represent a real surprise, thanks to weeks of leaks and speculation about new products, the introduction of a new iPhone, however, much of the attention of the event was.

It is a four-inch phone, at first, a glance is identical to an iPhone 5S, the phone lower specifications in the production line of the company. The new iPhone is called iPhone SE.

This new E in the name may mean efficiency largely because the new model delivers the same processing power of an iPhone 6S, which is twice what it is in a current 5S; the same is true for the graphics processor, which is now three times faster.

The phone has a new 12-megapixel camera, which in essence is very similar to what is found in the iPhone 6S, in terms of sensor technologies for focus and image color.

So, what Apple did was to introduce Tuesday a kind of iPhone 6S smaller. And this may have a lot of sense if you consider that much of the first owners of smartphones branded fail immediately to the largest, but the smaller models.

In large part, this is given by a pricing issue, as the larger models (6S and 6S Plus) are virtually unaffordable for most consumers, but this equation also weighs the variable size. The simple truth is that many users prefer a smaller phone.

This is not new news, even more, if you consider that largely brands usually offer smaller (and less able) versions of their larger and more powerful models.

Now, the issue of efficiency comes to a point, as Apple continues to insist on offering devices with 16GB of storage, because the weight of the software today, end up the phone without major uses after a few applications, photos and videos in 4K.

In the area of software, the company announced that from this Monday will be available the update to iOS 9.3, which comes with some interesting improvements. First is the introduction of Night Shift, a mode of use, based on geolocation user can adjust the colors on the screen at night to provide a warmer and less blue light.

This response to a series of studies to ensure that the blue light of the screens of electronic devices arrival disturbs sleep in people and alters its cycle of rest at night.

Another feature announced was the inclusion of password and fingerprint verification for notes taken in the devices. And, of course, this has much to do with the current debate in which Apple has engaged with the FBI for refusing to break the digital security of personal phone of one of the attackers shooting of San Bernardino, California.

The first words of the launch event, by Tim Cook, CEO of the company, were devoted to this topic. Cook said: "We built the iPhone for you. For many, the iPhone is an extension of each. We have to decide, as a nation, how much power the government on our data and our privacy. " We believe we have a responsibility to help each protect your data and privacy. We owe it to our customers and to our country. We will not deviate from this responsibility. "

As with the iPhone, the company introduced a smaller version of its iPad Pro, a tablet of 12 inches designed for heavy use, on the one hand, and which was launched with the promise to replace the personal computer of millions of people.

This is still far from happening, and the company has said in the event, the words of people like John Lasseter, Pixar's creative director, to defend the benefits of this tablet large.

The truth is that, yes, the iPad Pro has good technical specifications, but is far from becoming a replacement computer for more technical users it still does not include software heavy use for issues such as design and engineering, two of the sectors often they featured in advertising material of the company.

In a recent article in The New York Times, three users, including designers and engineers, they said that although the tablet is useful for customer presentations and meetings in which no group work, this is a device that still does not offer the power of a computer. The diagnosis may be maintained for a few years.

But this does not mean that the introduction of a 9.7-inch iPad Pro is useless because it may be an attractive combination for a certain portion of the market: a tablet with large capacities, but still easy to transport.

What this change in product line iPad indicates is that, despite wanting to hasten the arrival of the post-PC era, the company still continues to explore exactly what the tablets are used by its customers.
