Obama: "In truth, Putin is scrupulously polite, very frank"
After all the meetings he had with him, the US president agreed to give his impressions of Russian President Vladimir Putin. A great opportunity to make a snub to some clichés?
In an interview to the journalist of the newspaper The Altantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, Obama refused to endorse the impression that the Russian president would have the nasty and brutal air.
"In truth, Putin, during all our meetings, is scrupulously polite, very honest. He never made me wait two hours as it does with many others," Mr. Obama spoke to Jeffrey Goldberg.
Mr. Obama added that Russian President treated the Russian-American relations more seriously than previously thought in the United States. "He is constantly interested to appear in our partner and work with us, because it's still stupid."
According to him, Putin understands that Russia's position in the world has diminished considerably, but at the same time its policy in Ukraine or its support for Assad "does not make a player."
"You will not see it in any of those meeting here shaping the agenda", noted the US president. In response to a question about Russian policy in Ukraine and Syria, President Obama held that "Putin had acted in Ukraine in response to a satellite country that was about to escape him."
"He did exactly the same thing in Syria, to the great detriment of the welfare of his own country," he added. In the interview he gave to The Atlantic, the US president also said that the United States were not ready to trigger a full-scale war over Ukraine because, according to him, Russia will always in a position to maintain a progressive dominance.
Relations between the West and Moscow began to deteriorate following the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014. In response to the sanctions imposed against it by the US, the European Union and several other countries, Russia has adopted in August of the same year, against measures banning the import of certain foodstuffs from countries with restrictions hit the Russian economy.
